The Art Room Sunderland - Wednesday Watercolours
10am-12pm - The Art Room Sunderland - £10 per session
Come to the art room and join Kerry Cooke for the Wednesday watercolours sessions. All materials are included. Each week is a different topic, so there will something for everyone to paint. A drawing & sketching course designed to make you fall in love with drawing again, led by art teacher Kerry Cooke. Refreshments and all materials are included. Sessions are relaxed, inclusive, and open to all — no experience needed. Our Expressive Arts (Drama) is a fun and engaging class where participants explore drama, storytelling, and group activities. Through games and shared experiences, the session supports communication, imagination, and confidence, all while having fun in a friendly and encouraging space.

Spend the day enjoying a showcase of local talent, live music and hands-on activities. Browse local craft stalls, meet traders, and soak up the atmosphere as music sets the tone for the day. Attendees will be able to try out a range of musical instruments in interactive workshops, and enjoy a performances from emerging artists - offering a platform for up-and-coming musicians to share their talent with audiences. Folk in the Park will conclude with a lively performance from the Keel Assembly Ceilidh Band, who will be inviting visitors to join in and dance.

A community-led embroidery project by creative Michaela Wetherell that centres women’s lives, identities, and stories through stitched portraiture. An online research seminar focused on the alternative approaches, systems and ecologies of image making pioneered by the Sustainable Darkroom. Please book your attendance via the link.
Grounded in wider systems thinking and critical perspectives on the environment, Hannah Fletcherwill share her insight and practical experience of working in new and radical ways that place sustainability at the forefront of The Sustainable Darkroom’s practice and community. Marjolaine Ryley will share recent creative practice research including new approaches to sustainable photography and the inherent collaboration between people and plants.

Bringing together designers, businesses, educators, makers, charities and communities, the programme showcases the breadth of design happening across the North East. From hands-on making to thought-provoking discussions, the week offers plenty of opportunities to discover the many ways design shapes our lives.
Alongside the showcase, you can join a one-hour discussion panel on the topic of "Somewhere, Not Anywhere: A Conversation About Designing Places".

Sally Anderson / Witching Hour Zine - ART of Tarot

Join artist Sally Anderson for a deep dive into the art and artists behind the tarot. We'll gather in the historic Ship Isis pub, a historic space which is a favourite with paranormal investigation teams, offering a great range of ales. Starting with a short presentation to introduce you to some of the key artists behind the tarot, the symbolism and historical context, we'll move on to viewing some tarot card decks, then create our own tarot postcard drawing inspiration from the cards that appeal to you the most. Suitable for all levels of artist. Pencils, coloured pencils, and black fineliner drawing pens provided, or you're welcome to bring your own (dry, non toxic) art materials with you.

Book Launch: The Allotment Sisterhood by Kay Wilson

Kay Wilson will be chatting about her second novel, The Allotment Sisterhood, with ArtyParti producer Jay Sykes. She'll explain the inspiration for the book, which came from living beside allotments near Fulwell Mill in Sunderland and the route to self-publishing. Kay will be talking about how she writes a novel from the initial idea, getting to the first, of many, drafts, through to editing, choosing the right cover and launching the book to the world. She'll explain how she's got over challenges and why she writes, which sometimes is mystifying, even to her.

Sophie Piper is a photographer and PHD researcher exploring the hidden photographic histories of women’s work in twentieth century Sunderland, in collaboration with Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens. In this talk, Sophie will describe how her research into the Historic England archive introduced her to the work of photographer Eileen ‘Dusty’ Deste who documented women’s work at the Pyrex factory in Sunderland. Sophie is now collaborating with women who worked at Pyrex to expand and enrich the story of women’s work, using the work of Deste as inspiration. Booking required.
