Kathryn Robertson drawing the mural at the University of Sunderland

About Kathryn Robertson

Kathryn is an illustrator and muralist living in Sunderland, UK. Her’s is a simplistic and dynamic illustration style; using thick and thin lines in collaboration with sparse but eye-catching pops of single colour.

In 2019, Kathryn received the University of Sunderland 2019 Design Student Award, and her work is currently exhibited at the “Sunderland Selects” exhibition in London.

Murals

Kathryn’s recent mural commissions include the walls of the independent coffee shop Holmeside Coffee in Sunderland, and several buildings in the University of Sunderland, including their newly developed City Centre Gateway building.

Her contribution to the “City by the Sea” exhibition, featuring work created by a variety of Sunderland-based artists, is a mini-mural in the form of a surfboard. Entitled “All is Not Lost, this was originally designed as an entry for a competition for a new label on Vaux beer, and is now on display in The Beam on the former Vaux brewery site.

Tea Towel on Tour

Kathryn’s merchandise, featuring Sunderland-focused graphic design, is available for purchase at the Museum and Winter Gardens.

In February this year, an Instagram account named @TeaTowelOnTour ran by young globetrotter Helen Wilson, began posting pictures of Kathryn’s tea towel in various locations around the globe, and sparking others to do the same - “Just a Mackem towel living its best life.”
